Week 4 delivered one of the most exciting weekends in league history. StFX shocked the lacrosse world by snapping Dalhousie’s 139-game win streak, while Saint Mary’s showcased their dominance with back-to-back victories.
Saint Mary’s 14, Mount Allison 2
#6 SMU rolled past the Mounties with a commanding performance. Rookie goalie Lucas Johnstone shut the door after the first quarter, allowing zero goals the rest of the way in one of the strongest goaltending performances of the season so far. On offence, SMU spread the wealth, but it was Owen Cox and Dakota Morrisey who stole the show, each recording hat tricks.
StFX 10, Dalhousie 4
History was made in Antigonish on Saturday. The #7 X-Men snapped the longest win streak in collegiate lacrosse history, ending #3 Dalhousie’s 139-game run that dated back to 2012. StFX stormed out to a 6-1 halftime lead, and the Tigers never recovered. Veteran midfielder Garret Hines had his old team figured out, finding the back of the net twice.
StFX 8, Dalhousie 7
Sunday’s rematch in Halifax felt like the Tigers’ chance for revenge. For three quarters, it looked like they’d get it. Despite leading 7-4, the Tigers couldn’t hold on. Rookie midfielder Daniel Creurer out of Canton, New York spearheaded the comeback as StFX rattled off four unanswered goals in the fourth. Dal now finds itself in unfamiliar territory with back-to-back regular season losses for the first time in well over a decade.
Saint Mary’s 13, UPEI 7
24 hours after hammering Mount Allison, SMU proved their depth with their fifth win in a row, this time over UPEI. Dakota Morrisey capped a career weekend with a five-goal explosion, giving him eight tallies in his last two games. As usual, the Panthers were paced by veteran Connor McInnis, who netted a hat trick, but couldn’t keep pace with the Huskies’ firepower.
UNB 11, Mount Allison 8
The Battle of New Brunswick lived up to its billing as the most competitive game of the weekend. The Mounties traded punches with UNB for three quarters before the Reds finally pulled away late. Michael Gallop and Austin Hirschfeld combined for eight points, with Michael eyeing the first spot in the MUFLL scoring race. While Mount Allison showed flashes throughout the game, they fell just short of the upset.
For a decade, Dalhousie looked invincible. With StFX and SMU both rising, the MUFLL championship picture has shifted in a way fans haven’t seen in recent memory.
